We can send you a CD of a known-good copy of Cygwin, or you can burn your own installation DVD from our recommended image: cygwin_1.7.iso [1.9-GB DVD] or Old v1.4 cygwin_cd.iso [725-MB CD] (right-click to save-as).
Another option is to download the latest version from the original source by clicking here to go to the Cygwin project download page .
Note 1: We have found that some of the cygwin mirror download sites contain incomplete or inconsistent distributions that will not work properly. Therefore, we recommend using our known-good CD (above-top) to avoid difficulties!Note 2: For easiest install, we recommend installing ALL cygwin packages, which requires about 1.9 GB free space. Make sure you have enough space before you start. As an alternative, you could try a minimum install in less than 1.0 GB, but you must make sure you include the following modules:
If you use the two step download procedure, then theoretically you could start with a preliminary set and add modules as you find you need them. If unsure about which modules you need, and you have more than 1.9 GB free disk space, we strongly recommend installing ALL.
- development tools, gcc, etc..
- development libraries, Xlibs, etc.
- lesstif,
- X-windows
Note 3: We have found that on some newer centrally administered Microsoft platforms (ex. corporate administered), whomever wants cygwin installed must be granted temp Admin rights to install it. Then take away the privileges when finished and test-run for the first time.
